The Great Ridge Walk & Peveril Castle is a 8.0mi walking circuit that will take you along several peaks and through charming villages for breathtaking views of the surrounding Peak District landscape. Highlights along the trail include summiting the iconic peaks along The Great Ridge like Mam Tor, as well as a gorgeous walk through Cave Dale with the ruins of Peveril Castle looking overhead. This walk is packed full of amazing sights and historic charm.

Getting there

To reach the Great Ridge Walk & Peveril Castle car park from Chapel-en-le-Frith, head east on Market Street/B5470 and turn left onto Sheffield Road. Follow this for 4.2mi and make a left turn to enter the car park.

The Great Ridge Walk & Peveril Castle Trail Description

Exploring the Great Ridge Walk & Peveril Castle in the Peak District is a fun and ultra-scenic walking route that will take you through a good variety of terrain to experience some of the best views and historical sites that can be found in the area. The trail sets out from the car park at Mam Tor and climbs up the steep hill to arrive at the summit. From here, you will traverse The Great Ridge along Hollins Cross, Back Tor, and Lose Hill before descending the hillside and cutting across the open farmland towards Castleton. After passing through the charming village, continue to the southwest to pass through the picturesque limestone valley of Cave Dale and enjoy the sights of the historic 11th Century Peveril Castle towering above the landscape. Once you have made your way uphill, turn your direction to the north in order to walk through the final stretch of scenic farmland on the return to the parking lot at the foot of Mam Tor.
