Crag Lough and Hadrian’s Wall Circular Walk

Featuring fascinating historical sites, a well-known filming location, and a charming lake, the Crag Lough and Hadrian’s Wall Circular Walk is a short but spectacular walking route that will allow you to take in some of the natural and manmade beauty of the Northumberland countryside.

Setting out from the Steel Rigg car park, you will head to the northeast to cut across the open countryside while taking in some beautiful views of the rugged outcrop of Steel Rigg. Eventually, you will loop around Crag Lough and pass by Milecastle 38 of Hadrian’s Wall to climb uphill to the southwest above the lake.

From here, you will continue along this elevated position to the southwest, where you will quickly come to the Sycamore Gap Tree. This beautifully scenic tree situated in a saddle between two hills is also known as Robin Hood’s Tree, as it was used as a filming location for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Keeping along the trail, you will traverse Steel Rigg and pass by Milecastle 39, where you can explore a section of the ancient Roman fortification, before making your way back to the car park where you began your walk.
