Whitby Abbey and the Dracula Trail

Although the Whitby Abbey and the Dracula Trail features some amazingly beautiful scenery and historic buildings that will invoke thoughts of Bram Stoker’s iconic tale of eerie castles and vampires, you can rest assured that you won’t bump into any while out on the trail… as long as you set out in the day time!

Beginning at the Whitby Abbey car park, you will head to the northwest and explore the fascinating monastery that has its origins in the 7th Century CE, before looping around to the southeast to walk along the rugged coastal cliffs. After taking in the beautiful views of the North Sea, you will cut across the open countryside and turn to the northwest on the way into the town of Whitby.

Here, you will walk along the historic city streets and cross over the River Esk, making your way along the harbour to pass by The Dracula Experience and several monuments to the iconic fictional character that can be found throughout town. After crossing back over the River Esk, you will stroll along the water’s edge to reach the pier where Dracula came to shore upon the Russian ship Demeter, before turning to the southeast to climb the 199 steps back up to Whitby Abbey where you began the walk.
