The Tipsoo Lake Loop is an easy, short hike around a lake suitable for all ages and skill levels. This short hike is often combined with an ascent of Naches Peak, but the lake loop in itself is perfect for a low-key outing. Do note that this hike can get wet in rainy weather, but it offers extremely mild elevation gain and the chance to see lush wildflowers. If you arrive later in the day, you could be treated to the trail all to yourself.

Tipsoo Lake Trail Description

Tipsoo Lake Trail is a short, easy hike suitable for all ages. It features a lake, lots of wildflowers, and plenty of greenery. We recommend bringing bug spray for this trail.

The Tipsoo Lake Trail leaves from the parking lot and circles the lake. You can do the hike either way, but we recommend going clockwise for the best views. Walk to the lakeshore and directly follow the water’s edge to the Stephen Tyng Mather Memorial. Stephen Tyng Mather was an American conservationist and the founding director of the National Park Service.

From the memorial, return to the lakeshore and continue to follow the water’s edge around the lake. You’ll reconnect with the trail at the southern tip and return to the parking lot.

The Paradise area of Mount Rainier National Park is renowned for its expansive wildflower meadows and summit views. When James Longmire’s daughter-in-law, Martha, first saw this area, she said, “Oh, what a paradise!” She was right, and visitors flock to this part of the park in July and August when the blooms are at their best.
