Sourdough Gap from Sheep Lake Trail Description
Sourdough Gap is a fantastic natural viewpoint over Sheep Lake and the surrounding mountains and forest, and is one of many trails that navigate this beautiful part of Mount Rainier National Park. To enjoy this trail, begin hiking towards Sheep Lake.
After the first mile, which traverses a steep slope above the highway, you’ll turn north, finding reprieve from the road noise. Enjoy peeks of the view through the trees.
Sheep Lake is often occupied by hikers and splashing kids, so take some time here to enjoy the lake if you wish. Otherwise, hike around the lake, then begin a steeper climb following the valley wall. Sourdough Gap is a rocky gap in the saddle between two peaks, and from it, you can see Sheep Lake, the Crystal Lakes Basin, Mount St. Helens, and Mt. Adams.
After you’ve sufficiently soaked up the views, retrace your steps, perhaps stopping for a splash in Sheep Lake.
