Beinn Narnain Circular Walk

At 3038ft, Beinn Narnain may not stand as tall as its famous neighbour Beinn Ìme (3317ft), but it’s undoubtedly the more rugged and rocky peak out of the two making for a thrilling climb. The trail at times is faint, and rocky sections call for a willingness to scramble when necessary. The descent is steep and unrelenting in places, and waterproof footwear is recommended due to boggy sections. In a nutshell, this walk is the perfect match for those looking for a challenging hillwalk.

Beinn Narnain displays the typical rugged, rocky terrain of the Arrochar Alps, and its proximity to Glasgow makes this a perfect way to escape the city and tackle one of the Munros and make it back home in time for dinner. Views of The Cobbler and Beinn Ìme, as well as Loch Long, make this an excellent route for taking in the magical scenes of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

Heading out from the Succoth car park, cross the main road, taking the marked trail that unfurls across from the woods. The initial path is actually the main route to The Cobbler, also known as Ben Arthur, and you’ll follow, keeping an eye out for a faint path concealed beneath the undergrowth which heads right. Take the trail as it begins to climb uphill, and you’ll note its definition improves as you make your way out of the woods. You’ll walk past several concrete bases, relics of an old hydro project, soon arriving at another track. Head straight across the track to continue on the rough path which leads up over a rocky step. Dramatic views of Loch Long and Ben Lomond come into view here, so pause as long as you’d like to soak them up.

Press on the path that traces the side of the hill, continuing straight before veering slightly right to continue uphill. Be ready to take on some scrambles during this section, and remain vigilant of the boggy grounds ahead. Views of The Cobbler soon grace the trail, providing the perfect opportunity to take in the legendary outline of the cobbler at his workbench.

Continue on a flat section before embarking on yet another uphill climb to Cruach nam Miseag. Finally, a short downhill section leads you to the rock buttress known as Spearhead. Take the path that heads to the right of Spearhead, leading you to the final stretch to the summit. Reach the summit and enjoy the expansive views across the park. Noteworthy peaks included from this vista point are The Cobbler and Beinn Narnain’s impressive neighbour, Beinn Ìme.

Descend via the same path and retrace your steps to return to the car park where the walk began.
