Ben Chonzie Walk Description

The Ben Chonzie Walk is a great hillwalk for those looking for a moderate challenge and who are perhaps building towards tackling one of the higher hills in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. The 7.8mi walk follows a straightforward route up the hill and continues through heather moorlands to reach the summit. Boggy sections are often reported on the moorland section, so waterproof footwear is recommended. If hillwalking in the winter, ensure you’ve got the proper equipment for this hill, including an ice axe and crampons.

By Scottish Munro standards, this is one of the easier hillwalks, making it an excellent option for those looking to try their hand at a challenging climb that’s still feasible for moderately skilled walkers. As the highest peak within a large area of heather moorland, the views from the summit are well-worth pushing the limits of your comfort zone to reach!

From the car park, the hike begins up the track that heads towards the Coishavachan houses (they’re white). When you reach the two small cottages, make a right to continue through a gate that leads to a more rugged track. This sets you up on an uphill stretch before crossing a bridge and passing through another gate. You’ll soon spot the trail up Ben Chonzie and can begin to size up your opponent!

Pass by a small dam and make your way up the opposite side, sticking to the main path that leads uphill once the track splits. Continue to climb as the path leads to the crest, where you’ll take the path on the left before reaching it. Here you’ll likely encounter some boggy sections as you press on to follow the ridge, carpeted in blaeberry and heather. Pause to enjoy the views that have now opened up over the glen as you prepare to continue to the summit.

Maintain the track along the easiest ground until you reach a line of metal fence which marks your approach to the summit. Follow the fence as it turns northeast and guides you along on a right angle, setting you up for the final slope.

Arrive at the summit and revel in the remarkable views from 3054ft above, with Loch Turret sparkling in the distance. After enjoying the sense of accomplishment and the fresh summit air, continue on your descent via the same outward path. Retrace your steps, keeping an eye out for the fluffy mountain hares that populate Ben Chonzie. Return via the same path to return to the car park where the walk began.

Trail Highlights

Ben Chonzie

Ben Chonzie is a 3054ft hill in the Perth and Kinross area of Scotland and is classified as a Scottish Munro. The peak is sometimes referred to as “Ben-y-hone”. Much of the hill is covered in heather moorlands, and a large population of mountain hares call Ben Chonzie home.

Insider Hints

  • This is a great hillwalk for those with a moderate fitness level. If you’re looking to challenge yourself to reach a Munro summit and aren’t very experienced with climbing Munros, this walk is a great option!

  • Nearby Comrie Croft campground offers relaxed accommodations in Nordic tents and hostel accommodations as well.

  • Crieff has several pubs and restaurants, great for topping off the walk with a meal or pint.
