Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff Lakes Trail

Although not a long hike by the standards of most, the Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff Lakes Trail possess a fair amount of elevation fluctuation in relation to its distance, and is therefore rather steep at sections. Due to this, the route is likely not appropriate for families with young children. It is also important to note that – in the springtime especially – the mosquitoes along the route can become numerous and bothersome. We therefore recommend bringing bug repellent with you!

If you are looking for a moderately difficult route within Lassen Volcanic National Park with great views, then the Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff Lakes Trail is ideal for you! The route is an ideal mix of hiking and scenic enjoyment for intermediate hikers, and families with older children. In addition, as the Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff Lakes Trail is located right off a main highway within the park, it is easily accessible.

Having arrived at the trailhead, follow the Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff Lakes Trail north. After a few hundred feet, you will arrive at a junction within the trail. At the junction, take the eastern pathway over terrain that steadily begins to decline. Continuing on the trail, you will first reach the southern shore of Terrace Lake, and then almost immediately, you will arrive at the southern shore of Shadow Lake.

After arriving at Shadow Lakes southern shore, continue on along the path as it makes its way adjacent to the eastern shore of the lake before veering away from it to the east. The Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff Lakes Trail will cross a creek and pass by a small unnamed pond to the south before heading southwards and arriving at the northern shore of Cliff Lake. Once you’re ready, simply backtrack your steps towards the trailhead. Keep in mind that the trail is uphill for the majority of the returning hike.

Reading Peak

A popular hiking, scrambling, and backcountry skiing destination, Reading Peak is a beautiful mountain within Lassen Volcanic National Park. Visible to the south of the Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff Lakes Trail, the imposing mountain watches over the surrounding area from an elevation of 8684ft. While not as renowned as nearby Lassen Peak, Reading Peak is truly a sight to behold.
