Brokeoff Mountain Trail Description

Brokeoff Mountain Trail’s length and notable elevation incline mean it is likely not appropriate for those seeking a more casual hiking experience and families with children. As the terrain found along the route is physically demanding, we strongly recommend wearing a good pair of hiking shoes as well as bringing a pair of hiking poles. Lastly, the weather can change rapidly when traveling in an alpine environment, so we recommend bringing extra layers of clothing. If you’re travelling this route during late autumn, early spring, or winter, it’s inevitable that you bring crampons or microspikes! We definitely advise checking the trail conditions before you go.

Brokeoff Mountain Trail is an excellent choice for your next hiking adventure simply because of how beautiful it is. Uninterrupted sightlines of the surrounding landscape can be enjoyed at Brokeoff Mountain Peak and the trail itself will take you alongside charming creeks and picturesque alpine lakes. While physically demanding, the route does not require any technical mountaineering experience and is therefore doable by a larger portion of the hiking community. All in all, what’s not to love about the Brokeoff Mountain Trail?

With your vehicle parked along Lassen Park Road, follow the Brokeoff Mountain Trail as it makes its way first south, and then northwest. After crossing several creeks, the trail will begin to incline in elevation steadily before plateauing shortly. The Plateau will not last long, however, as after passing a number of small alpine lakes, the incline will become steeper and more challenging.

Continuing on its northwestern heading, the Brokeoff Mountain Trail will ascend the southern and then western breadth of the mountain. Having reached the western side of Brokeoff Mountain Trail, one final – but large – switchback awaits you. Veering north to south, the switchback will deliver you to the peak of Brokeoff Mountain, where you should take some time and enjoy the incredible views! Once you’re ready, backtrack your steps towards the trailhead, and your waiting vehicle.

Trail Highlights

Brokeoff Mountain

Also known as Mount Tehama, Brokeoff Mountain is the second highest peak within Lassen Volcanic National Park. An eroded stratovolcano, the geological feature was formed by viscous lava that was not able to easily flow away from the volcano’s crater – therefore creating the steep sides Brokeoff Mountain is known for.

Stratovolcanoes are among the most common volcano types, but are also regarded as the most dangerous. Their characteristic shape does not easily allow pressure to escape, therefore, usually resulting in eruptions that are incredibly destructive.

Insider Hints

  • During the early spring and late fall, snow and ice can be found along the route, so crampons and poles are strongly recommended!

  • The mosquitoes along the route can be prolific - bring bug repellent.

  • Wear sunscreen and a good hat to protect yourself from the effects of the powerful alpine sun.

  • Parking can be hard to find, so we recommend arriving early so as to more easily acquire it.
