The Wray Castle to Ferry House Trail is a beautifully scenic walking route that will take you from the grounds of a Victorian-Era castle along the shores of Windermere to the Ferry House for boats travelling across the lake. While out on the trail, you will enjoy a peaceful lakeside setting and take in some amazing views across the water and nearby fells before doubling back on the return leg of the walk. This well-maintained route is easy to navigate and suitable for a wide range of walkers.

Getting there

To reach the trailhead for the Wray Castle to Ferry House Trail from Clappersgate, drive south on B5286 for 1.5mi and turn left to continue on for another 0.8mi. Make another left and you will arrive at the trailhead on the grounds of Wray Castle in 0.3mi.

Walking the Wray Castle to Ferry House Trail is a popular activity for people in the Lake District that are looking for charming lakeside views and the chance to visit historical sites. The trail sets out from the grounds of Wray Castle, a Victorian-Era estate overlooking Windermere before working closer to the shores of the lake. From here, you will follow the trail south along the edge of the water and enjoy the picturesque views across the lake while popping in and out of the cover of the forest. Eventually, you will arrive at the ferry terminal for the boats that travel back and forth across the lake. After reaching this point, turn back and retrace your steps to gain a different perspective of the landscape on your return back to the trailhead where you began.
