The Red Pike & Bleaberry Tarn Circular Walk is a great adventure that will see you traverse several rugged summits for sweeping views across the Lake District. While out on the trail, you will climb the steep hillside to visit the calm waters of Bleaberry Tarn and the top of Red Pike, walking along the summits of High Stile and High Crag before descending to the shores of Buttermere. This wonderfully scenic route is fairly challenging with a steep, rocky descent, making it suitable for seasoned walkers.

Getting there

To reach the car park for the Red Pike & Bleaberry Tarn Circular Walk from Cockermouth, drive southeast on Lorton Street/B5292 for 3.2mi and make a slight right onto B5289. Follow this for 2.7mi and turn left to continue on the same road for another 4.1mi. Here, you will find the car park on the right.

Red Pike & Bleaberry Tarn Circular Walk Description

Although challenging, the Red Pike & Bleaberry Tarn Circular Walk is a popular trail in the Lake District thanks to its breathtaking views overlooking Buttermere and a number of well-known fells, such as Fleetwith Pike. The trail sets out from the village of Buttermere and heads toward the edge of the lake to the south before climbing up the steep hillside to reach the quiet shores of Bleaberry Tarn. From here, you will continue uphill for a short distance to reach the summit of Red Pike. Follow the trail to the southeast and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains and Buttermere Lake below, as you traverse the rugged terrain along the tops of High Stile and High Crag. Reaching the last of these peaks, you will descend the steep and rocky hillside until you reach the scenic shores of Buttermere. Follow along the western edge of the lake and enjoy the views across the water, before eventually arriving back in the village where you began your journey.

Done this the opposite way round and found it a truly stunning walk along the summits. Hard work coming down from Red Pike to the tarn.. Spectacular
