Lost Horse Mine Trail Description

A popular route within Joshua Tree National Park, the Lost Horse Mine Trail is heavily trafficked, and can therefore become rather busy. Hikers who are looking for a more secluded experience may want to skip the Lost Horse Mine Trail in favor of a less popular route deeper in the park’s interior.

Having reached the trailhead, make your way east along Lost Horse Mine Loop Trail. After crossing a stream that may or may not have water in it depending on the time of year, follow the trail to the southeast. The elevation will begin to steadily incline as the Lost Horse Mine Trail brings you to a junction within the trail. At the junction, take the easternmost path as it continues to climb in elevation. The trail will veer to the south before once again heading east and bringing you to the Lost Horse Mine itself.

A maze of pathways will take you throughout the abandoned mining complex, so take your time and be sure to read the educational plaques if you’re interested in the history of resource extraction within Joshua Tree National Park. Once you have thoroughly explored, backtrack your steps towards the trailhead.
