A moderately difficult hike, the Burnt Hill Trail is perfect for the beginner hiker who is looking for a bit more of a challenge. The route is both not too long, and inclines in elevation steadily for the most part, making it a good stepping stone to more challenging hikes within Joshua Tree National Park. Wildlife along the route is also abundant.

Burnt Hill Trail Description

Portions of the Burnt Hill Trail traverse over sandy terrain, making it a more challenging route physically then it would be otherwise. We also would not recommend this route to families with young children, as the distance and elevation gain would likely not be appropriate for them.

Having arrived at the trailhead, take the California Riding and Hiking Trail south past the first junction in the trail. The route continues south over relatively flat terrain before arriving at a second junction. At the junction, take the western route onto Burnt Hill Trail as it follows the wash from a stream bed. The Burnt Hill Trail will head southeast, inclining in elevation as it goes.

The route will lead you to another junction, where you are to take the eastern pathway onto Canyon View Trail. Stay on Canyon View Trail as it leads you first east, and then north through craggy terrain. The route will then head west as the elevation begins to decline. You will then arrive at a previously passed junction, where you will follow the Black Rock Canyon Trail north towards the trailhead.
