Caribou Pass Hike Description
Summiting the Continental Divide is no easy feat, but the views from the top make the effort worthwhile. The Caribou Pass Hike is a stimulating hike through the creek-ridden alpine forest up to the Divide. This hike is great for those easing into technical terrain hikes, as limited scrambling is required. Though, do make sure you are wearing sturdy footwear as you will need to navigate tree roots and rocky terrain near the summit. The pass will also be very windy! Bring a windbreaker and extra layers to stay warm!
Begin this trek from the Junco Lake Trailhead. From the trailhead, take the Caribou Pass Trail southeast. Continue along the wooded trail as you pass pools and waterfalls. At the intersection, veer left, staying on the Caribou Pass Trail. The path will get steeper as you begin to top the timberline. Mind your step on the increasingly rocky terrain as you near the pass. At this point, hikers will have to navigate the steep rocky scree up to Caribou Pass. Once you summit the ridge and meet the pass you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. You will also get up close and personal with Santanta Peak.
Take a rest and recharge, revelling in the stunning Colorado scenery before beginning your descent. Retrace your steps along the path all the way back to the carpark.
