Veit Springs Trail

Veit Springs Trail is an interesting, varied hike that begins from the Snow Bowl in Flagstaff, Arizona. It leads you along a wide, easily navigable trail to the convergence of several springs that drew early tribes and then later settlers to this area. This area is named in memory of Lamar Haines, a conservationist, teacher, and outdoorsman. If you see the route referred to as the Lamar Haines Loop, this is why.

One of the most interesting things about the Veit Springs Trail is its variety of points of interest. By itself, it’s a beautiful hike along springs and underneath aspens that shimmer golden in the fall. With the addition of old stone cabins and pictographs, it becomes a historical exploration as much as a natural one.

This route is very easy and the entire family should be able to complete it. There are no significant challenges, there’s very little elevation gain, and it’s a very easy hike to navigate. The area is also dog-friendly. You’ll just want to watch for slippery mud in the springtime, but we recommend timing this hike for summer or fall if you can to appreciate the wildflowers or the fall foliage.

The route begins from Snow Bowl Road. Enjoy the well-maintained, shaded trail as you follow the signage. About a quarter of a mile in, the route splits at the base of the loop. Our route goes counterclockwise here.

When you reach the plaque commemorating Lamar Haines, look to the left for a number of short trails that lead to different points of interest. You’ll pass the torn-down remains of Charles Ludwig Viet’s cabin first.

Next, you’ll find a stone structure built over a spring. To the right of this structure, there is another stone structure built into the bottom of basalt cliffs. As you walk around the cliff bases, look for a triangular cave with Native American pictographs on it. This little clue shows the value and draw of the water sources here, even many years ago.

As you explore, it’s very important to remember that we want to preserve all of these artifacts for future generations. Don’t touch what you find!

Both the road and the trail will get you back to the loop, where you’ll enjoy a stroll through the shady, serene forest back to the trailhead.

Lamar Haines Memorial Wildlife Area

The 160-acre Lamar Haines Memorial Wildlife Area covers what used to be a settlement, and before then, an area used by Native American tribes for its water sources. The area was settled by Ludwig Veit in 1892 under the Homestead Act. Then, it was purchased in 1928 by the Jenks Family. In 1948, it was acquired by Arizona Fish and Game to protect the water sources here for wildlife.
