New South Castle Trail Description
The New South Castle Trail is a fun hiking route in Fernie that utilizes several different trails to form a loop that travels up Castle Mountain and down the hillside. Because this is a multi-use trail, hikers will need to watch out for passing bikers and give them ample room to ride. The trail climbs uphill through intermittent forest cover for a moderate elevation gain of 2238ft and provides some beautiful views overlooking the lush expanse of the Elk Valley. Keep an eye on your map or GPS while you work downhill, as it is easy to get sidetracked on the intersecting trails that branch off from the main route. When you reach the bottom of the hillside, the trail follows along Cokato Road on a route parallel to the Elk River until you arrive back at the trailhead.
