Bickleigh Mill Footpath Description

The Bickleigh Mill Footpath is only a short walking route along fairly level terrain; however, it is in a popular tourist location. You might want to arrive early if you want to secure parking and explore the area without throngs of other walkers around. Additionally, you will want to wear comfortable walking shoes to better traverse the riverside trail.

Although it may be a quick adventure, that doesn’t mean that it is lacking in beautiful scenery or interesting things to do. As the trail sets out from the Devonshire Centre, you will have plenty of options to learn about the local history of the mill, pop into the bistro for a delicious lunch, visit with some animals at the working farm – including brightly coloured peacocks – and explore the tranquil atmosphere along the edge of the River Exe. If you are in the area and are looking for some fun activities to keep the kids busy for a few hours, then the Bickleigh Mill Footpath is definitely a great option.

Setting out from the car park, make your way to the northeast and cross over the road, turning right onto the lane that will lead you into the heart of the Devonshire Centre. After 300ft, turn left along the footpath and make your way through the buildings, where you will find the 18th Century corn mill, as well as the other fun activities mentioned above. Continue on to the northeast for the next 0.5mi, as the trail enters into a peaceful stretch of woodland landscape along the banks of the River Exe. Enjoy the views across the winding river before heading back along the trail to retrace your steps to the car park, having completed your adventure along the Bickleigh Mill Footpath.

Trail Highlights

Bickleigh Mill

Located along the banks of the River Exe in Devon, the Bickleigh Mill was an 18th Century corn mill that was badly damaged during some serious flooding in the 1960s. A decade later, the mill and surrounding land were developed into the Devonshire Centre, a working farm and mill that featured a craft centre. A lovely bistro can also be found on site, making it a great place to spend an afternoon with kids learning about local history

Insider Hints

  • A large car park can be found across the road from the mill.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes.

  • Keep your dog on a leash.
