The Fingle Wood Circular Walk is an easy-going adventure in Dartmoor National Park that will expose you to the beautifully scenic woodland terrain along the Banks of the River Teign. While out on this walk, you will make your way through Cod Wood to reach the edge of the water, following the river back to the east to reach the View of the Valley and the remnants of the Iron Age site of Wooston Castle. This is a great route if you are simply looking to relax and reconnect with nature.

Getting there

To reach the trailhead for the Fingle Woods Circular Walk from Moretonhampstead, drive north on Lime Street for 0.2mi and turn left to continue on for another 0.8mi. Make a slight left here and follow the road for 1.1mi, keeping left at the fork. After another 490ft, you will find the car park straight ahead.

Fingle Wood Walk Description

Walking the Fingle Wood Circular will allow you to experience the natural beauty of this small forested corner of Dartmoor National Park that features a wonderfully scenic riverside setting, atmospheric woodland terrain, and an interesting historical site. Setting out from the car park, you will make your way north into the cover of the forest and follow the path as it turns to the northwest to descend the hillside. After reaching the edge of the River Teign, follow its banks to the east and relax in the peaceful riverside setting, eventually turning to the south to climb uphill. Here, you will be able to enjoy some lovely views at the View of the Valley vantage point, as well as the opportunity to check out the remnants of an Iron Age hillfort known as Wooston Castle. After exploring the area, continue south to return through the forest to the car park.
