The Dragon Point Trail is a short walk to a grand lookout over the narrow walled Black Canyon and the Gunnison River below. Lookout over the impressive marbled gneiss cliff. This natural wonder will stimulate your imagination as you try and recognize the supposed dragons carved out by the pegmatite marbling.

Dragon Point Trail Description

Lookout points are abundant in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, but the Dragon Point Trail lookout is quite unique. This particular vantage point of the Painted Wall puts visitors face to face with the dragons painted into the marbling. Though not all agree that there are dragons, nor can everyone distinguish them; but it is fun to try and pick them out nonetheless. This path is short and super easy to navigate, so it’s great for novice hikers and families alike. Make sure you purchase a Park permit from the National Parks gateway prior to hiking.

Begin your journey to the Dragon Point Lookout from the parking lot. Head northwest on the Dragon Point Lookout Trail. Follow this path as it guides you through the desert-like landscape. As you progress you will notice the serviceberry bushes and juniper trees that line the path. Continue hiking as the trail begins to descend towards the lookout. Once at the viewpoint, admire the phenomenal painted wall and try to find the two dragons! The narrow cliff walls that flank the seemingly tiny river below will take your breath away.

Revel in the impressive Black Canyon scenery before retracing your steps up the path and back to the carpark.
