Lucky Peak Loop Hike

Escape the business of the city and escape into the wilderness along the Lucky Peak Loop. This scenic circuit on the southernmost portion of the Boise Front Range draws quite the crowd—no matter the season. While you likely will be in the company of others, a general rule for those seeking tranquility is to explore in the mornings or evenings to avoid the crowds. This route is not for the faint of heart; the significant elevation gain and exposed terrain warrant quite the sweat. Ensure you have an abundance of water, wear SPF, and dress layers as insurance against chilly conditions at the often fog-shrouded summit. Note parking is roadside at the trailhead, so please respect the neighborhood.

Unwind and relax along the Lucky Peak Loop. This long and involved adventure provides ample time for self-reflection and reconnection. As you wander, you will have the opportunity to interact with like-minded adventurers, including mountain bikers and determined trail runners. Despite the heavy usage, the wilderness maintains its rustic nature and boasts a peaceful experience. While this trail is open and accessible year-round, the fall is our favorite time to explore as the autumn colors transform the forested landscape. The cooler weather brings more tolerable hiking conditions—though wildflowers adorn the terrain in the spring. No matter the season, the scenery is gorgeous, and wildlife is abundant, so make sure you bring your camera!

With plenty of water in tow, your adventure along the Lucky Park Loop departs from the #12 Homestead Trailhead. Setting out from here, the #12 Homestead Trail will begin to climb into the plains, offering an expansive view of the journey ahead of you. Soon after your departure, the path will intersect with a few seasonal streams passing a sheep pasture. Rerouting each, you will reach an intersection, veer left here, and you will be diverted onto the #8 Lucky Peak. As you ascend the slopes, you will explore fields of sagebrush and bitterbrush, amongst a variety of other brush species. As you contour the ridges of Maynard Gulch, you will likely notice the increased presence of pines that rise from the arid terrain.

After some climbing, you will ultimately reach the summit of Lucky Peak. Revel in the views of Boise below and the snow-dusted Rocky Mountains in the distant northwest. You will also be granted sights of the nearby forested foothills of the Boise Mountains. Snap a few photos of the mountainous landscape, then begin your descent down the slope via the E Shaw Mountain Road. As you navigate the southbound route, you will be rewarded with views of vibrant wildflowers in the spring. Keeping an eye out for mule deer and foxes along the way, you will eventually confront a junction with the #11 West Highland Valley.

At the trail’s end, merge onto the West Highland Valley Road, exploring the residential area beneath the peak. When you reach a crossroad, turn right onto E Warm Springs Avenue briefly, taking a connector trail towards the Boise River. Turn right here onto the Boise River Greenbelt, heading northward along the banks of the scenic river. Travel this path to S Shakespeare Way, turning left onto S Bard Avenue. The road’s end will offer another connector trail onto E Woodcross Drive. Wander this road, turning right onto the S Council Spring Road at the appropriate intersection, which will ultimately deliver you back to your vehicle.
