Terrace and Cliff Lakes Hike Description
Treat yourself to unparalleled vistas of not one, not two, but four post-card perfect lakes in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. This awe-inspiring adventure through the alpine terrain is incomparable. Traveling over rocky ridges, blown down trees, seasonal streams, and up steep ascents, the scenery is worth the sweat. Note that the path lacks proper signposts in sections, so consider using the trail GPS to navigate the terrain easily. Additionally, as much of the terrain is rocky and uneven, a pair of sturdy, ankle bracing footwear will make a world of difference.
Setting out from the trailhead, the Terrace and Cliff Lakes Trail travels southwestward through alpine meadows adorned with vibrant wildflowers and forestlands decorated with granite outcroppings. Eventually, the path will open to Cedar Lake—revel in the scene of the crystal-clear lake bounded by towering granite cliffs, then continue along the path, crossing over the South Fork Sacramento River. Soon you will pass Lower Cliff Lake before arriving at Cliff Lake.
Admire the beauty of the charming alpine pools, and if you have some gas left in the tank, tackle the vertiginous scramble up to Terrace Lake. Terrace Lake will reward you with panoramic views of the mountainous landscape. Then, when you are rested and rehydrated, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
