This hiking route guide leads you up North Mountain on Trail 101 and North Mountain National Trail in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. This is a straightforward approach to the top of North Mountain and makes for a moderately difficult hike suitable for most skill levels and ages. Dogs are permitted on this trail on leash. Bring lots of water with you and try to hike in the mornings before it gets too hot.

Trail 101 to North Mountain National Trail Description
Trail 101 to North Mountain National Trail is a route in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve that begins near the North Mountain Visitor Center and leads you up North Mountain. This hike is moderately difficult and it’s generally suitable for strong beginners and active families. It’s an excellent trail to take in the rest of the preserve from.
This hike is dog-friendly as long as furry friends are kept on leash. Remember to bring lots of water with you and consider wearing sun protection. Avoid hiking during the heat of the day if temperatures are expected to be high.
From the trailhead next to the visitor center, follow Trail 100, bearing left at the fork and then left again. The next fork is where Trail 101 splits off to the left, so go left to follow it. Cross the wash and approach the road, where you’ll curve to the right and begin your climb up the mountain. Stay right at both junctions and then follow the trail along the ridgeline as it climbs to the top. From the summit, turn around and retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
