Jackass Lakes Hike Description
Immerse yourself in the alpine environment and revel in the beauty of the granite terrain. Explore the mixed forestlands, granite gardens, and the shimmering alpine lake bounded by bluffs. Incredibly picturesque, this trek is no walk in the park. The initial segment of the hike is the steepest and most technical section, but don’t let that discourage you; the scenes are well worth the sweat! Additionally, the route to the trailhead is rough and rugged, so a vehicle with 4-wheel drive and high ground clearance is recommended.
Setting out from the trailhead, the Jackass Lakes Hike follows the Jackass Lakes Trail west. Shortly after, the path will divert you northwest up a set of switchbacks. Then, the route will curve north as you begin to climb further into the wild, weaving you through the sparse shade of mixed conifers and granite outcrops. Continue hiking, and the trail will ultimately deliver you to Lower Jackass Lake.
Revel in the blue hue of the water and dip your tired feet in the chilly alpine waters. If you still have some gas left in the tank, continue trekking along the path up to Middle Jackasss Lake. Admire the views of the mountainous landscape, and when you are ready, retrace your footing along the route back to the trailhead.
