Difficulty Rating:
Walker Lake Trail is a short, easy hike up to a lake in the middle of a crater in Arizona’s Coconino National Forest. The lake itself is nice, but what’s really special is if you choose to lap the crater rim. The views are wonderful, particularly when the aspens are golden in the fall. This isn’t usually a busy hike, so you won’t have to share the trail too much. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Walker Lake Trail Description
Walker Lake Trail is a quick jaunt up to a small lake in the middle of a crater in Coconino National Forest. This hike is a simple trek that won’t take long, but if you add a loop around the rim of the crater, it becomes quite an impressive hike with great views. It’s at its best in the fall when the aspens are in their full autumn color.
This trailhead can be hard to find on mapping apps and services, so we recommend dropping a pin using the GPS coordinates or double-checking your destination before leaving.
From the trailhead, hike up the crater to the trail split. Stay right here. You’ll make two wide turns up to the second trail splits, which loops the lake. Our route ends with the lake loop, but we encourage you to explore the rim of the crater for the best views. When you’re ready, return to the trailhead on the same route you used on the outbound trip.
