Catalina Birding Loop Description
For birders spending the day in Catalina State Park, the Catalina Birding Loop makes for a scenic, easy outing into prime bird habitat in this excellent local park. This loop is suitable for all skill levels and ages and can be done on its own as a nature walk, or you can use it as a warm-up for longer adventures in the park. We love a picnic by the river after hikes in this area, too.
You won’t need any special gear for this hike, but do remember to always take water with you when hiking in the hot Arizona sun. Dogs are permitted on this trail as long as they’re kept on leash. There are some steep wooden stairs on this route that may be difficult for hikers with mobility challenges.
From the Sutherland Trailhead, cross the wash and stay right onto the Birding Trail. Where the loop splits, go right. You’ll loop around the Montrose Wash, looking for Anna’s Hummingbirds, Gambel’s Quail, Gila Woodpeckers, finches, and more. The loop will return you to the trail that crosses the wash, which you can follow back to the trailhead.
