The Thunder Knob Trail is a pleasant moderate hike, switchbacking gently to a knob above Diablo Lake with views of nearby mountains. It’s just over 3.1mi in length with around 656ft of elevation gain, making it suitable for families and beginners. The trail is very well maintained and easy to follow.
Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be kept on leash.

The trailhead for Thunder Knob Trail is off North Cascades Highway near the Colonial Creek Campground.

Thunder Knob Trail Description
Thunder Knob Trail is a moderate hike with a calm atmosphere, making it a great choice for family outings or relaxed short trips. The trail is very well-kept and easy to follow, and you can continue to enjoy the lakeshore once you’re done hiking.
Begin from the trailhead, hiking northwest across the stream to the foot of the knob. The trail gently switchbacks to help you up the elevation gain, which isn’t overwhelming at any point. You’ll get a beautiful view about halfway up, where the trail evens out a bit. Enjoy the view at the top of the knob, then retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
