The walk to Great Shunner Fell is a challenging journey within Yorkshire Dales National Park that will produce breathtaking views from atop Great Shunner Fell. While out on the trail, you will leave the town of Hawes behind and traverse the nearly barren landscape of the moor to reach the summit, where you will have a commanding view of the park. The long distance, exposure, and rugged terrain along the route make it suitable for seasoned walkers only.

Great Shunner Fell Walk Description

The Great Shunner Fell Walk isn’t an overly popular route in the Yorkshire Dales, but that is largely due to the overall distance as opposed to a lack of beautiful views or a great experience. Sweeping views across the rugged terrain of the park make this a spectacular adventure if you are able to handle the rigors of the trail.

Setting out from the town of Hawes, you will cross over the River Ure and head to the northwest to make your way through the village of Hardraw. From here, you will climb uphill across the open fields to the northwest before transitioning onto the rough and rugged terrain of the moor.

After the relatively steep ascent of Great Shunner Fell, you will experience breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, before heading down the slopes to the southeast. This latter half of the walk is a little bit more difficult to navigate until you reach a lane. Follow this back downhill to meet up with the main path that will lead you back to the starting point of your walk in Hawes.
