The Old Growth Trail is a 3.0mi out-and-back hiking route just outside of Fernie, BC, that climbs gently uphill through a valley and offers scenic views of the beautiful old-growth cedar trees in the area. This route is well-maintained and does not feature any difficult or technical terrain, making it a great option for beginner hikers. Along the route, you will experience a serene forest atmosphere, as well as beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the waters of Island Lake.
Getting there
To get to the Old Growth Trail from Fernie, head to the southwest on BC-3 for 1.5mi and turn right on Mount Fernie Park Road. In 3.7mi, you will find the trailhead on the left side of the road and the parking area on the right.

Old Growth Trail Description
The Old Growth Trail is a relatively short but scenic hike that invites you into the natural beauty of the old-growth cedar forests near Fernie. This trail climbs gently uphill through the valley alongside Mount Fernie Park Road and heads up to the beautiful waters of Island Lake and the nearby lodge. Hikers should make sure to check for any trail closures in the area as moose and bear activity can often dictate access to this hiking route. The terrain along this trail is a perfect mix of forest and valley terrain with small gains in elevation, making it more than manageable for most hikers. You can expect beautiful views of Mount Fernie, the Three Sisters, and the rugged Lizard Range, as well as the picturesque Island Lake as you make your way along the trail. Once you reach the lodge, treat yourself to some refreshments before heading back down the trail.
