Longshaw Estate Walk

With a mix of woodland, farm, and moorland landscapes, the Longshaw Estate Walk is a laid-back adventure that provides walkers with a good variety of terrain and some scenic views of the Peak District. While the route is relatively flat, there are a few small climbs and rocky stretches of trail. Be sure to wear decent walking footwear for this journey. Additionally, the area can become quite busy due to the trails in the area and the presence of the Longshaw Lodge visitor centre. Arrive early to secure parking and enjoy the trails without the crowds.

Setting out from the car park next to the Fox House Inn, make your way southwest across the road to head into the forest and pass by the visitor centre. Continue through the charming forest to walk by the Longshaw Lodge before crossing an open stretch of farmland that is flanked by forests. From here, the trail will lead back into the shady cover of the trees, providing you with a relaxing atmosphere until you arrive at a junction at the side of the road. Take the path to the right to continue in a westward direction.

After a short distance across some open terrain, you will enter back into the forest of Oak’s Wood and continue on the trail as it follows closely alongside a stream to cross over the road. From here, you will skirt around the edge of the Grindleford railway station and make your way across Burbage Brook, following it north through Padley Gorge to traverse the forested slopes of Owler Tor.

Keep north along the brook as the landscape transitions to open moorland. When you arrive at the bridge crossing at the edge of the brook, make a sharp right turn to cross the open farmland to the south on the return leg of the walk. Eventually, you will cross over the road and arrive back at the visitor centre, at which point you will need to head northeast to return to the car park at the Fox House inn, which is also a great spot for some post-walk refreshments.
