The Macclesfield Forest Walk via the Forest Bridleway is a relaxing experience that will allow you to explore the woodland terrain that makes up the last remaining parcel of what was once the Royal Forest of Macclesfield. In contrast to its past use as hunting grounds for the nobility, the area now operates as a nature reserve, with small populations of red deer inhabiting the area. In addition to viewing wildlife, while out on the trail, you will be able to view beautiful mature trees and the calm waters of the Ridgegate Reservoir.
Getting there
To reach the car park for the Macclesfield Forest Walk via Forest Bridleway Walk from Langley, head east on Main Road for 0.2mi and keep right onto Clarke Lane. After 0.6mi, make a right turn and continue on for 0.5mi, keeping left at the next junction to arrive at the car park in 0.1mi.

Macclesfield Forest via Forest Bridleway Trail Description
While the Macclesfield Forest Walk via Forest Bridleway in Peak District NP isn’t overly strenuous, there are a few steeper parts along the trail that can be particularly tricky when wet or icy. Take caution if you are out on the trail during inclement weather and make sure to wear proper walking footwear. Additionally, the pay-and-display car park can become quite busy during prime hours and on weekends. Arrive early to avoid the crowds.
Setting out from the car park, head west along the trail that runs parallel to the road. When you meet up with the road, cross over to the other side and continue along the forested path on the opposite side to eventually arrive at the edge of the Ridgegate Reservoir. Take in the views across the water with the iconic Tegg’s Nose standing proudly behind before turning to the south to continue walking through the forest.
Follow the path as it skirts around the edge of the wood and turns east to cross over the road. After a short distance, you will come to a gated path on your right. Make your way through the gate and continue along the Forest Bridleway as it leads you in a southeastern direction. Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the forest as you meander amongst the trees and eventually arrive at Nessit Hill. Continue east along the Forest Bridleway as it enters into the territory of the Peak District National Park and begins to turn more towards the northeast.
Make your way through the breathtaking woodland terrain until you meet up with the edge of Standing Stone Road. Head left here and pass through the gate to continue through the forest on the final leg of the journey. The trail here runs parallel to the road for a while before meeting back up with it. Head left and continue along the road until you can pick the trail back up on your left hand side. From here, continue heading west through the wood while enjoying the last bit of serenity before arriving at the picnic area next to the car park where you began the walk.
