Route Description for Glenmore Reservoir

We chose Bebo Grove as the starting point for the Glenmore Reservoir biking route, as the trail follows well-marked bike pathways, but you can start this ride anywhere. If the distance is too long, consider parking at North or South Glenmore Park and only cycling around the reservoir.

From Bebo Grove, ride west through Fish Creek, eventually going up towards Shannon Terrace at the end of Fish Creek Park.

Follow the path as it heads north, on the western edge of Calgary. The open space on your left is the Tsuut’ina Nation, which is a First Nation reserve located in Alberta, Canada—and created by Treaty 7.

Follow the pathway over 130 Ave. SW, heading toward the Woodbine Off Leash Area. Continue along the bike path as it heads north, with the SW portion of the Calgary Ring Road on your left. At Anderson Rd. SW you will need to head east for a couple of minutes to get to the bridge and cross over Anderson Rd. SW.

The pathway brings you back to the western edge and takes you all the way to South Glenmore Park, and the Glenmore Reservoir.
You can do the path around Glenmore Reservoir any direction, but we prefer clockwise.

So head left, and ride through the trees, towards the Weaselhead Flats. At a Y-junction, go right and the path curves to the right and goes down a steep hill, which makes for either an anxious or a fun ride, depending on how much you like steep hills.

At the bottom of the hill, you cycle through the Weaselhead Flats.

You’ll soon come to a large bridge over the Elbow River. This has beautiful views overlooking the Elbow River and the Weaselhead Flats.

On the other side, prepare for a steep ascent back up to the ridge and the Weaselhead parking lot, which is in North Glenmore Park. There is a nice picnic area here, the Snowy Owl Picnic Site, if you want to stop and enjoy a packed lunch.

Once up the hill, go right and cycle on the ridge, enjoying pretty views of the reservoir.

The path splits at a Y-intersection, take a right along Glenmore Pathway, keeping close to the reservoir, beside Earl Grey Golf Club and eventually ending up on a dedicated bike path that runs beside Glenmore Trail SW. Follow the path downhill beside Glenmore Trail, and cross over the causeway before you climb up the Glenmore Pathway that goes steeply uphill and beside the Rockyview Hospital.

It’s obvious, but never bike on Glenmore Trail SW, or any other freeway in Calgary, it’s dangerous and illegal.

Follow the Glenmore Pathway south and eventually come out in Eagle Ridge. Go right and follow Eagle Ridge Dr for a short distance, before going right again on a bike path that takes you to Heritage Park Historical Village.

Railway Cafe can be found in front of the Heritage Park Historical Village. The egg salad sandwich and a coffee is highly recommended.

Follow the path through the parking lot of Heritage Park and then continue south on a bike path that goes in the direction of Glenmore Landing. The Glenmore Pathway doesn’t go directly into Glenmore Landing, but you can detour for a snack if you’d like.

Follow the Glenmore Pathway as it curves around the reservoir and heads west. This is a picturesque part of the ride, and we recommend taking the lower track when given the option.

Go slow here, as this is shared with walkers, and there are a few blind corners.

Continue through Variety Spray Park and eventually you come to South Glenmore Parking Area West, where you turn left onto the path that leads you south, back along the edge of Calgary to Fish Creek Park.

The only change on the way back, is instead of taking the pathway back down into Fish Creek, we follow Woodpath Rd. that leads into the Shannon Terrace Parking Lot to finish the ride.

Insider Hints

  • If you get hungry on the Glenmore Reservoir biking route, stop in at the Railway Cafe for a sandwich and coffee.

  • Be prepared to go slow in some areas, as there are a few blind corners on this trail. Watch for pedestrians.

Did the loop just a few days ago! Started from the northern side or Reservoir though. Going counter-clockwise, the path in the southern part of the reservoir was amazing! Basically long rolling downhill through the lush forest in autumn colors. Sadly Heritage Park and the whole village is closed on Monday and Tuesday (we didn't know that!) so no ice cream for us lol.
