Kayenta Trail to the Emerald Pools Description

The Kayenta Trail is an easy, family-friendly hike to the Emerald Pools of Zion National Park. This hike has lots of shade and a gentle grade, so it is perfect for young kids or those looking for a relaxing stroll through a beautiful, lush area of the park.

Starting at the Grotto picnic area, cross the Virgin River at the West Rim Trailhead. After the bridge, take a left and follow the Kayenta trail southwest along the river’s edge. After about 0.6mi, the path will branch off at three different points. To see the Lower Emerald Pools, take a left at the first or second junction; both paths will take you there. If you want to see the Middle Pools, take a left at the third junction. To see the Upper Pools, continue following the path to your right. All the pools are only a short distance (100 yards or so) off the main trail, so you definitely have time to see them all.

Swimming is not permitted in these pools, but they are a great place to stop and enjoy lunch. There are lots of trails that branch off from the Kayenta if you want to extend your day hiking around the area; if not, turn around and follow your path back to the Grotto picnic site in time to catch the shuttle home.
