Mammoth Peak Hike Description

Challenge yourself along the Mammoth Peak Hike. Demanding endurance and navigational skills, this journey is not for the faint of heart! Though it is quite challenging, we love this exciting adventure and think you will too if you don’t mind doing a bit of scrambling. A trail GPS is necessary along this adventure, as well as a sturdy pair of footwear! You should also remember to bring plenty of water, as there is quite a bit of elevation packers into this relatively short climb. Additionally, be sure to head out early in the morning to reach the summit before noon, which will mitigate the chances of getting caught in an afternoon storm. Note: the National Park charges an entrance fee; refer to the NPS website for additional details.

Setting out from the trailhead, your journey along the Mammoth Peak Trail travels southeast through the meadowlands before beginning the climb. The steep incline is intense and rocky, so mind your footing and take your time. Ascending the northwestern ridge of the peak, you will have to navigate several large boulders that block the path. Be sure to enjoy the sparse tree shade when you have it! Keep an eye on the skies and continue up the ridge. Eventually, after much exhaustion and climbing, you will reach the summit of Mammoth Peak.

From atop the mountain, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the encompassing snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains and Tuolumne Meadows below. Revel in the panoramas, rest, and rehydrate before beginning your descent. When you are ready, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
