The Bolton Bridge to Simon’s Seat Walk is a stunning - if lengthy - walk through Yorkshire Dales National Park that will take you through a mix of laidback and challenging terrain. While out on this walk, you will follow along the winding banks of the River Wharfe and relax in the waterside setting before traversing the rugged terrain of the moor on the way to Simon’s Seat. This is a long walk that features some sections of rough terrain, so be sure to plan your adventure in advance and bring adequate clothing and supplies.
Getting there
To reach the trailhead for the Bolton Bridge to Simon’s Seat Walk from Skipton, head northeast on High Street for 0.9mi and turn right onto A59/A65 and follow it for 4.6mi. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto B6160 and continue on for 0.1mi, turning right to arrive at the car park.

The walk from Bolton Bridge to Simon’s Seat is a popular trail with long-distance walkers, thanks to the overall length of the route, rough terrain, and beautifully scenic views. You will definitely need some proper walking boots, as the latter half of the route features a fair amount of elevation gain and traverses the rugged moors of the Yorkshire Dales.
Setting out from Bolton Bridge, you will follow the coursing waters of the River Wharfe to the northwest as they meander through the countryside and offer a pleasant start to the walk. After passing by the 15th Century Barden Tower, the route will turn to the east away from the river to climb up the steep hillside.
Upon reaching the summit of Simon’s Seat and experiencing the breathtaking views there, you will follow the trail as it initially heads to the southeast across the undulating moor before breaking to the southwest to lead you downhill and back across the river. Follow the western bank, as it will lead you back to the trailhead where you began.
