Specimen Ridge Trail Description
The Specimen Ridge Trail is an epic route through the Wyoming wilderness. This 17-mile long trail is not for the inexperienced nor for the faint of heart. If you are looking to hike this route, ensure you begin early in the morning and bring along a headlamp in case you wind up finishing in the dark. To prepare, you should pack lots of high-calorie, salty snacks and bring more water than you think you’ll need. With wildlife abound, and incredible views at every turn, the Specimen Ridge Trail is an absolutely fantastic adventure.
Beginning at the Specimen Ridge Trailhead, follow the trail and stay left at the first two divides. Continue southeast to the top of Amethyst Mountain. This summit is a great place to rest and enjoy the incredible views of the landscape below. Descend Amethyst Mountain via the southeast ridge and follow the path to the Lamar River. Cross the river and then follow the Lamar Valley Trail northeast to the trailhead along Northeast Entrance Road.
Make sure you have a shuttle plan for the end of the trail that will get you back to the trailhead or get you home where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest.
