South Rim to Ribbon Lake Loop Description

The South Rim to Ribbon Lake Loop is a lovely route in Yellowstone National Park. This trail can get quite buggy, especially in the early summer. We strongly recommend bringing along bug repellent or wearing long layers to combat the mosquitoes. With stunning views the whole way and relatively easy terrain, this route is a fantastic way to spend the day exploring Yellowstone National Park with loved ones.

Beginning at the Artist Point Trailhead, follow the path northeast. Take a quick stop at Artist Point and check out the incredible views of Yellowstone’s Lower Falls before continuing onwards. Follow the path along the canyon, then take the first trail on your right to cut south down to Lily Pad Lake. From the south end of Lily Pad Lake, take the trail on your left to hike the last mile east to Ribbon Lake.

Enjoy quick rest or a picnic lunch at Ribbon Lake, then follow the trail as it winds its way southwest. Stay right at the next three junctions, then take a left to follow the Clear Lake Trail to the Upper Falls Viewpoint. Take a moment at this viewpoint to admire the incredible power of the Yellowstone Falls before following the South Rim Trail east back to the Artist Point Trailhead where you began.
