Lost Lake Loop Description

The Lost Lake Loop is a fantastic hike in Yellowstone. This route begins with a steep climb that may make you second guess your choice of trails, but we promise it gets better; the trail soon flattens out to a relaxing stroll. The Lost Lake Loop can get buggy in the early summer, so we recommend packing some bug spray if you are hiking in June or July. Besides just mosquitoes, it is common to see wildlife along this circuit, including elk, bison, and deer. As with any hike in Yellowstone National Park, be sure that everyone in your hiking party is familiar with bear safety protocols. At least one member of your group should carry bear spray and know how to use it properly. If you do encounter wild animals, do not approach or feed them and be sure to admire them from a safe distance.

The Lost Lake Loop is a hidden gem in Yellowstone National Park with gorgeous views throughout. On your hike, be sure to check out the Petrified Tree exhibit just off the trail. This redwood is over 50 million years old and was preserved by violent volcanic activity in the area millions and millions of years ago.

To hike the Lost Lake Loop, begin at the Lost Lake Trailhead and follow the trail west across Lost Creek. Stay right where the trail divides to follow the path along the north shore of Lost Lake. Approximately 0.6 miles past the Lake, check out the Petrified Tree on the right side of the path before heading east along the trail to complete the circuit.
