Sweetwater Gap Hike Description
Exhibiting a diversity of flora and fauna and topographic variety, the Sweetwater Gap Hike offers a stimulating experience. Enjoy the tranquility of the backcountry as you wander through luxuriant meadowlands often abundant with moose and escape beneath the canopy of the mixed-pine woodlands. As much of this route is exposed, make sure you check the forecast before heading out and wear SPF in the summer months. Though unlikely, bear encounters are possible, so make sure at least one person in your group has bear spray.
Setting out from the trailhead, the Sweetwater Gap Trail escapes into the wilderness. Meandering along the slow-moving Sweetwater River, the path will weave between forestlands and meadows. As you explore the exposed terrain, you will be granted glimpses of the encompassing mountains. Gradually climbing, the path will progress between Mount Nystrom and Roaring Fork Mountain. After crossing the gap, the path will eventually merge onto the Middle Fork Trail.
You will ultimately reach your turnaround point at the Middle Popo Agie River. From here, turn around and retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
