Big Elk Lake Trail

The Big Elk Lake Trail is a short but moderately challenging hike in the western Uintas. The hardest part of this route is getting to the trailhead. Access to the Big Elk Lake Trailhead requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle with good clearance. Though the “official” trailhead is at the end of Norway Flats Road, the last mile or so is fairly rugged. We recommend driving up Norway Flats as far as you feel comfortable, then parking and hiking the rest of the road to the trailhead if the road gets too rough. From the trailhead, the path to Big Elk Lake is rocky, and the trail can be unclear at times. We suggest downloading a map ahead of time to aid in navigation.

Once you get there, Big Elk Lake itself is gorgeous. Big Elk Lake is the perfect place to kick back and relax in the Utah wilderness with crystal clear alpine waters, lots of spots to camp and great fishing. The short hike means that you can pack backcountry luxuries such as folding chairs and a cooler so you can really make the most of your time at Big Elk Lake.

To hike to Big Elk Lake, head northeast along the old forest road. Stay to your right at the divide to make your way to Big Elk Lake.

Enjoy an afternoon or an evening on the shores of Big Elk Lake before heading back the way you came or setting up your tent for a peaceful night under the stars.

Big Elk Lake

Big Elk Lake is a gorgeous alpine lake with opportunities for fishing and overnight camping. If you are camping at Big Elk Lake, tent sites must be at least 200ft away from the edge of the water. There are no natural springs around Big Elk Lake so bring a method for water filtration/treatment. Please practice No-Trace-Camping principles, pack out what you pack in, and leave your campsite better than you found it.

Big Elk Lake is a good spot to fish for Cutthroat Trout and Brook Trout. If you are looking to fish, you will have the best luck with a small fly (#16) in the morning or evening.
