Monteriggioni to Piazza del Campo Siena Via Francigena hike

Start this walk on the via Francigena in Monteriggioni at the Piazza Roma. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the smell of lavender in the air as you descend the stairs from Monteriggioni to Strada Comunale di Monteriggioni. Turn right on this road and follow it around to the left. As it is about to curve to the right take the path that leads straight. Follow this short path and at the parking lot, reconnect with Strada Comunale di Monteriggioni. Continue on this road until you reach a t-junction with Via Cassia Nord. Note that the map shows us going around on a gravel road, but you should go straight.

Cross Via Cassia Nord and go left, then 33ft later go right onto Strada del Gallinaio. On Strada del Gallinaio, you will quickly come to a Y junction, to continue on this road veer to the right. At the next junction, take the left and then in 410ft go to the left again (just before the road) that goes along the woods. Continue along this dirt path taking you by olive groves and through the woods until you reach Strada Bracciano (a gravel road). Turn right onto this road, it will shortly become Strada dell’Uccellatoio. Walk along this road for 1.0mi, then take a right onto a dirt footpath. If you reach the main road SR2 (Via Cassia Nord), you have gone too far.

Continue along this agricultural path until you reach a wood and a driveway and turn left following the signage for Via Francigena. Continue along the edge of the woods, past another home until you reach a t-junction. At this junction turn right. Follow this track until you come to a paved road (Str. Di Riciano). Cross over this road and continue ahead.

Continue along this dirt track until you come to another, small paved road (Str. Della Villa). At this t-junction turn left. Continue along this road and you’ll see a tower up ahead. When the road splits before the tower go right and follow this road as it curves around and gets smaller. Soon the path appears again (by a gate to the house) and take the trail to the right that goes into the trees.

Follow this path through the trees for 249.8mi then take a left into the wooded divider between fields. Continue along here until a t-junction with the paths and turn right. Walk along this path until you come to a paved road (SP 101) where you will go right.

Once on SP101 follow it until you intersect with Strada dell’Osteriaccia. Turn left and continue along Strada dell’Osteriaccia for 0.7mi and where the road becomes Str. Di Montalbuccio veer onto a path on the left. Follow this path through the woods, crossing over SP 101 and then reentering the woods.

You will pass the Siena riding club and then shortly hit a junction, where you will go left onto Str. Di Casciano. Shortly afterwards go right onto Str. Delle Costa. Continue on this road and you will pass over SS674 and eventually come to Via Gaetano Milanesi where you will take a right.

Follow Via Gaetano Milanesi to a junction for Strada di Marciano. Go left and continue on this road, eventually coming to a round-a-bout where (if you were a car) you would take the second exit onto Viale Camillo Benso di Cavour. Stay on this road as it becomes Viale Vittorio Emanuele II and eventually cross the road to Piazza Guido Chigi Saracini. Go straight through the square and follow along this road to the Piazza del Campo where there are many places to enjoy a meal and/or drink after a long day.
