Soldier Trail is a tough 5.3mi hike in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness known for the waterfalls on the route. With an interesting gorge and great views to see in addition to the falls, this is a winner in our books. This hike is also unique in that you’ll do most of the work in the first half and enjoy a more relaxed latter half of your ascent. If you can get through the start, you’re golden. Expect moderate traffic on this route.

Soldier Trail Description

Soldier Trail is an underrated hike in our opinion. This 5.3mi route might scare some off with its steep start, but continue through and you’ll explore a neat gorge and two waterfalls (weather permitting). It’s also nice to be able to take in the views on flatter terrain knowing the elevation gain is behind you. If you can hike this route after it’s been raining, you’ll have the best experience at the falls.

This hike is tough and it doesn’t offer much shade in the steepest sections. Bring plenty of water and wear sun protection. Take breaks as you need them to avoid overheating. Poles are useful for this hike.

From the road, you’ll hike through one wide switchback before heading straight up the mountainside. Expect this first half to feel unrelenting. You’ll gain about 1100ft in a mile and a half. Once you crest the top, the grade decreases significantly. You’ll hike through the Soldier Gorge, where the first waterfall will be on your left. Continue through to the second waterfall, which is just before the end of trail marker. From here, turn back and retrace your steps to the trailhead.
