Difficulty Rating:
The Gould Mine hike might not have gold to find (it does have an old mine), but it does have lots of the characteristic saguaros that Saguaro National Park is known for. This is a good pick if you want a shorter hike that’ll still get your heart rate up. With a decent bit of elevation gain included, it’s more of a moderate hike despite being less than two and a half miles long. Expect heavy traffic on this route.

Gould Mine Hike Description
The Gould Mine hike is a gold mine for hikers who love Tucson’s statement saguaros. The cacti on this route are particularly impressive. Speaking of gold, though, there is an old mine you can check out. The hike is less than two and a half miles long, but it’s got enough elevation gain to still make it feel satisfying by the time you’re done. This route is easy enough for families and beginner hikers but it’s a pleasant trip for anyone.
The hike is across from the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, so consider a stop by after your hike if you haven’t gone. Bring water on this hike and hike in the morning or evening when it’s a bit cooler out.
From the trailhead, you can decide which way to do the hike. Our route goes counterclockwise, but some users feel that clockwise is easier. Counterclockwise, you’ll stay right and hike along the right side of the canyon. At the junctions at the top of the loop, stay left. Take a minute to appreciate the old mine and the scenery before continuing your loop down the other side of the canyon. The route will take you back to the trailhead.
