Freeman Homestead Nature Trail Description
The Freeman Homestead Nature Trail is an ideal trail for visitors to the desert of Tucson. With name placards identifying the plants that call this part of the desert home, you can learn your ocotillos from your cholla and your prickly pears from your saguaros. This is a very short and easy trail, so consider using it as a warm-up for other hikes in Saguaro National Park East.
Note that there is a modest day-use fee required to access Saguaro National Park East. Dogs are not permitted on this trail whether on-leash or not.
From the trailhead, take the obvious route out into the desert. It’s well-defined with nice footing. Check out each plant ID as you go. At the trail split, stay right (our route goes this direction, but you could certainly do it the other way if you wanted to). Hike to the wash, then follow the wash to a junction. Keep left and return to the trailhead.
