Explorer Trail Description

The Explorer Trail is part of a network of trails in Tucson Mountain park used by hikers and mountain bikers. This route takes you along the northern base of Cat Mountain to the W Ajo Highway and back over 5.6mi. The connecting trails make it easy to customize your route if you want a longer or shorter adventure. The views of Cat Mountain on this route are great.

Note that dogs are not permitted on this trail. You’ll want to remember to share the trail as there may be bikes as well. Finally, remember to bring lots of water and avoid hiking during the heat of the day.

From the Sarasota Trailhead, cross Starr Pass Trail and head to your right to pick up the route that follows the base of the small peak ahead of you. Cross between this peak and Cat Mountain, staying right to trace the northern base of Cat Mountain. There’s some gentle climbing in this section, but nothing too difficult.

You’ll come out from a small canyon and head towards the trail’s end near the highway. Users report this last half-mile being the least enjoyable due to road noise and litter on the trail (remember to pack out yours!), so some choose to skip it and turn back at the far end of Cat Mountain. When you reach the road, turn around and retrace your steps to the trailhead.
