Deer Creek Loop Trail

The Deer Creek Loop is an interesting route with unique challenges that yield unique rewards. The views are some of the best you can find in this part of the Tonto National Forest, but the trail is very rugged and sometimes nearly impassable due to overgrowth. Nothing a machete can’t fix! While clippers or a machete are recommended, you should also consider wearing long pants and sleeves. This route can be used for longer day trips or for backpacking. While the distance is solid, the elevation gain feels fairly gradual throughout. Bring plenty of water as the creek may or may not be flowing depending on recent rainfall.

From the trailhead, the route splits. Go right to follow it to Deer Creek. Once it reaches Deer Creek, it follows the south side of the creek, making creek crossing unnecessary. As you hike further from the trailhead, the canyon narrows and the route mostly sticks to the hill above the creek. After rounding the far end of the loop, you won’t be following the water anymore. Look for cairns to lead you to the steep descent that precedes your arrival at the trailhead.
