Firle Beacon Walk Description

The Firle Beacon Walk is beautiful; however, things can get very muddy in the wetter months and prove difficult for walking if you do not have the proper footwear. There are two areas to note as well regarding fitness levels. There is a steep ascent and descent along this path, so if you are thinking of walking here, be prepared for this.

This path is stunning and takes you through a wonderful walk and boasts views across the South Downs National Park and even goes as far as Seabourne, where the Seven Sisters are located and stall tall against the sparkling blue ocean. There is a lot to see and do along this path, which is nice as you can make a day out of exploring this area.

Beginning at the car park, you will see a wooden gate, which you will pass through and then follow the blue arrow, taking you on South Downs Way. Follow the path ahead and keep an eye out for animals grazing in the fields around you. Along this area, you will get your first glimpse of the beauty that surrounds you as you look down into the valley below. This area is popular with paragliders because of the height of the hills and the stunning scenery. The path bends a bit and opens up to views of the South Coast.

You will continue along this ridge until you reach a tower built in 1819 as a gamekeeper’s cottage. This was placed on the hill to alert the gamekeeper of any danger that lurked nearby. You will then reach Firle Beacon, an impressive 712ft high and showcases 360-degree views of the landscapes that lie below. This area is known to house Exmoor ponies, so keep an eye out for them! Continue on South Downs Way after taking in the views, and you will soon catch a glimpse of Seabourne and the ocean below.

As you follow the path, you will come across the Bloomsbury Group country house and the Charleston Farmhouse. Moving on, you will see Beanstalk Tea Garden that is open to the public, so take a break if you please. When finished, hop back on track, and soon you will approach the steep ascent, and once you reach the top, you will be back at the car park where you began.

Insider Hints
