Rhobell Fawr may not be one of Snowdonia’s tallest or most striking mountains, but its relative isolation provides plenty of room for views. Known for its lovely summer wildflowers, Rhobell Fawr is a great option for a hearty yet not overly taxing day on the hill. Best of all, there are very few crowds to deal with here.

Rhobell Fawr Description

From your spot at the road’s end, set off along a tarmac track through the woods that starts at a slight right to the road then curves over in a westerly direction before turning back north. Follow this until you reach a junction in the Coed y Brenin forest. From here, you should be able to see Rhobell Fawr. Turn left and head towards the mountain. You’ll cross the Nant Goch stream, then at the mountain base, turn right and work your way northeast.

The path leads to a stretch of rocky boulders with no clear route, so you’ll have to make your way up—fortunately, the summit should be visible and easy to aim for. A drystone wall below the summit is the final obstacle. Clamber over a stile, and another ten minutes takes you to the top of Rhobell Fawr. After some time enjoying the views, descend through a natural path between rocky outcrops aligned to the south. You’ll eventually link up with the track that circles the base of the mountain. Turn right to re-join the route you took on the way up, and retrace your steps back to the starting point.
