Ranger Path to Snowdon Trail Description

Ranger Path is named after one of the original guides in the area, John Morton. After he bought the Snowdon Ranger Hotel, the footpath was named in honour of his legacy. Ranger Path Is one of the most straightforward routes up Snowdon, making it a good choice for those less comfortable with scrambling or route finding. It’s also less busy than other ascents, so you should be able to enjoy plenty of room to breathe on this beautiful walk. Watch for “Llwybr Cwellyn” on signage, which is the path’s Welsh name.

Cross the road from the car park and head right. Beginning at the signed trailhead, turn left at the Snowdon Ranger Station and then right at the farm track. You’ll continue towards the farm, crossing over a cattle grid and passing the farmhouse.

Passing a large white arrow with PATH printed on it (helpful, indeed), the path starts switchbacking. The entire way through it is well-kept, so enjoy easy footing and plenty of room to pass other hikers if needed.

At the final switchback, you’ll pass a rowan tree and a gate. Go through and enjoy a more level path through pretty moorland. About a kilometre and a half past the switchbacks, you’ll go through a gate to the section that leads to Llyn Ffynnon-y-gwas and Bwlch Cwm Brwynog. You’ll find a great natural seat up here to enjoy the view for a bit.

More switchbacks help you gain elevation quickly. Once you reach the Snowdon Mountain Railway, take care to cross the tracks only where it is clearly signed. Immediately head to the right. Don’t be tempted to follow the tracks!

Soon you’ll arrive at Bwlch Glas, where Llanberis, Crib Goch, Pyg, and Miner’s tracks all meet. You’ll have to deal with some uneven stone steps on your final approach before the “spiral staircase” to the summit trig. Soak up the views here!

When you’re ready to descend, keep an eye out for the stone marker of Ranger’s Path at Bwlch Glas and then simply follow the same track down.

Insider Hints

  • The Snowdonia Parc Inn in Waunfawr has excellent ales, so it’s a top choice for a post-hike drink.

  • There is a portaloo in the parking lot; you generally won’t be allowed to use facilities in the hostel

  • The nearby shores of Llyn Cwellyn are nice for a bagged lunch before or after your hike
