Moel Hebog looms over the village of Beddgelert, inextricably linked to its people and past. While not as tall as its famous neighbour Snowdon, it still makes for a fantastic day of adventure. A circular walk provides easy access to and from the village, with lush forests and breathtaking views to be found along the way.

Moel Hebog Circular Walk Description

From the car park, set off along the broad Lon Gwyrfai Trail, which connects the villages of Beddgelert and Rhyd Ddu. This follows a river and passes both over and under the Welsh Highland Railway. You’ll arrive at a barn where the Lon Gwyrfai Trail clearly turns to the right. Shortly after this turn, a fork appears, and you’ll head left following signs marking the footpath for Moel Hebog.

From here, it’s a steady steep ascent up the mountain. Scrambling might be required in some sections, with scree paths to navigate. A series of cairns help you stay on track. You’ll pass two false summits before arriving at the proper peak. Take a well-deserved rest and some pictures of the Eifionydd hills unfolding below.

A wall on your right-hand side marks your path onwards. Carefully descend the steep grass and head for the nearby summit of the shorter Moel yr Ogof. You’ll cross through a gap in the rocks and stroll over a simple wooden bridge that lifts over the bog to get there. The last of your three summits, Moel Llefn, requires another down-and-up via a grassy path. From here, the descent into Bwlch Cwm Trwsgwl should unfold to your left—it’s a bit tricky to spot until you’re right on top of it.

The path continues towards the forest, with an old quarry on your right. At the quarry, clamber over a stile and follow a slate path, taking care over the steep sections. At Bwlch Cwm Trwsgwl, turn right into the forest. The path may be quite boggy, but you reach a drier forestry track on your left after a few hundred meters. You can continue on the original path to cut down the distance if it’s dry enough. Following the forestry track, take a right and then a left, looking for signs listing the mountain bike trails of Bedwen. Shortly afterwards, a final sharp left connects you back on the Lon Gwyrfai trail, which leads back into the village.

Yes! This route definitely falls under a ‘4’ for difficulty—that’s for sure. Thanks so much for your comment and letting us know!

False. It's hard not moderate. I'm not inexperienced hiker but that would be dangerous to continue to a steep Noel Lefn. I turned around while I could. It's certainly not a moderate route!!!
