Eagle and Mosquito Lakes Hike Description

Reserved for experienced hikers and intrepid spirits, the Eagle and Mosquito Lakes Hike will put your stamina to the test. This high-country excursion travels through some of the most beautiful alpine settings in the National Park. Be sure to wear a sturdy pair of footwear to safeguard your ankles on the rocky terrain and dress in layers as insurance against varying weather conditions. Additionally, when exploring in the late fall or winter—microspikes are a must, and trekking poles are recommended.

Setting out from the trailhead, the Eagle and Mosquito Lakes Hike follows the White Chief Trail southwardly. Eventually, you will reach an intersection; veer left here onto the Eagle Lake Trail. This route tracks along Eagle Creek, passing the Eagle Sinkhole before reaching another junction. Keeping left again, you will be led along the curves of Eagle Creek through montane meadows and granite gardens to Eagle Lake. Revel in the beauty of the basin framed by the rugged cliffs of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, then head back down to the intersection.

Veer left, and you will be diverted along the Mosquito Lakes Trail, which will guide you up and over the mountain saddle and down to the charming alpine lake. Rejuvenate your tired feet in the frigid waters, then retrace your footing back to the junction, and turn left, heading back the way you came to the trailhead.
